The photographer Claudia Wiens has accompanied for several years the work of ANA HUNNA and the founding of the ANA HUNNA International Network. Since 1994 she has been discovering the MENA region with her camera, with a focus on Egypt, where she lived from 1999 to 2009. “Many wonderful people have allowed me to document their lives. In addition to photographing people, especially women, I also love to capture bizarre and funny moments / details,“ says Claudia Wiens.

All pictures are part of a larger story. For example, the portrait of the proud shepherdess Juma, who she photographed for GEO magazine in 2011 for a story about women and democracy in Tunisia. There emancipation has a long tradition. The right to vote for women was introduced as early as 1959.

Or the image of the veiled woman, behind which there is a completely different story than one would guess. It’s a Syrian actress who doesn’t wear a veil of any sort in real life. Claudia Wiens accompanied the production of soap operas in Syria for two weeks with her camera, also for a GEO reportage. This picture is from the soap opera “Bab Al Harra” (Neighborhood Gate), a popular Ramadan series with many seasons.
